The 6th I·CARE Book Festival Ends with Great Success

“The 6th I·CARE Book Festival” (“The Book Festival”) had the theme of “Reading Together” and featured a series of activities including the Book Crossing Pavilion, Book Talks, I·CARE Theatre 2023-24 and ULC Buddy’s Exhibition. The aim was to encourage students to enjoy the pleasure of reading on campus.

The Book Crossing Pavilion received overwhelming responses from the CUHK community and various parties, resulting in over 25,000 donated second-hand books. The Book Crossing Pavilion started on 12 March and lasted until 27 March, with over three thousand students and staff participating and over 20,000 books were distributed. The participants have found their beloved books and enjoyed the experience tremendously.

Five book talks were organised, divided into the “Reading Classics” series and the “Read the City” series, enriching students’ reading experiences. We invited Mr. Wong Tin-yan to share his experience in the efforts and experiences in Form Society, Dr. Sampson Wong to discuss Hong Kong’s urban culture, Professor Chow Po-chung to analyse “A Theory of Justice”, Dr. Szeto Wai-man to discuss the Turing Test, and finally, Prof. Carole Hang-fung Hoyan led us in exploring Eileen Chang’s views on love. These book talks attracted nearly five hundred participants to join.

For the I·CARE Theatre 2023-24, The Great Passage was screened directed by Yuya Ishii, on the evening of 16 April. After the screening, Prof. Chow Po Chung offered us an inspiring sharing. Hundreds of participants enjoyed this extraordinary experience through this thought-provoking film.

In addition, the “Buddy of University Lecture on Civility” (ULC Buddy) Programme was launched for the first time in this academic year. The ULC Buddy curated a small-scale exhibition on Hong Kong typography, called Word Art: Wandering around Chinese Fonts and the Font Sticker Workshop. Special thanks to Mr. Lee Kin-Ming for lending a replica of manuscript for the Lee Hon Kong Ka font, allowing participants to appreciate the beauty of this unique typeface.

The success of this Book Festival is attributed to the great support of alumni, teachers, and staff from various departments, as well as the participation of ULC Buddy and student helpers. We appreciate everyone’s dedication and support, and look forward to meeting everyone again in next Book Festival.
