Inside Out: Helping Young Professionals Succeed in Employment through the Professional Grooming Series

First impressions are crucial in the job market, and the goal of the Professional Grooming Series is to equip students with the skills and confidence they need. This CPDC career guidance programme series focuses on practical grooming and presentation techniques to help everyone prepare for the first step in workplace.

Each workshop in the series is designed to address the situations students face as they transit from campus to the workplace. The Dress to Impress workshop emphasizes how to create a versatile wardrobe that showcases professionalism while maintaining personal style and characters. Students learn about different dress codes to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in any setting, from interviews to office environments. Participants were proactive to attend the workshop in their prepared work-related attire and get individualized feedback from the professional image consultant.

This year, the newly developed Dining Etiquette workshop not only teaches students valuable skills for dining in professional settings but also allows them to practice what they’ve learned during a mock business lunch. These social nuances may seem small but they significantly enhance students’ confidence in social situations and help them make a positive impression in the workplace.

In the Make-Up and Hairstyling Workshop, students gain hands-on experience in creating a professional appearance. Instructors demonstrate makeup and hairstyle techniques, enabling students to practice enhancing their personal image and become confident in work situations.

The series culminates in Professional Portrait-Taking Day. After learning about dressing and grooming, students are given an opportunity to put their learnings to practice. Professional photographers take high-quality headshots for students—an essential tool for job applications and social platforms like LinkedIn. A polished professional portrait can enhance their image and help them stand out in a competitive job market.

By focusing on the needs and aspirations of students, the Professional Grooming Series becomes valuable resource for them to enter the workforce with confidence. It is not just about appearance; it’s about building a professional identity that resonates and opens doors to future opportunities. Through this series, the Career Planning and Development Center is committed to cultivating a generation of confident, professional individuals ready to make a lasting impact in their careers.
