The Leadership Enhancement and Development (LEAD) Programme is a year-long programme that integrates leadership training with outbound social service, aiming to cultivate and expand students’ empathy, compassion, leadership skills and global exposure. Building on the success and positive feedback received from the student participants of the previous year, the Student Experience and Development Section (SEDS) of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) has expanded the programme to benefit even more students. The registration number went up to 210+ students this year and 100+ students were being selected to join the LEAD programme in 2024-25. 12 Student Mentors were selected for the LEAD programme in 2024-25.
This year, the LEAD programme introduced a mentoring system that adopts the train-the-trainer approach. Twelve selected LEAD student mentors will receive a series of training, topics including team building, leadership styles, effective communication, goal setting, debriefing skills, risk management, and more, before leading their student mentees for a 2-week overseas service-learning tour in Sri Lanka, Nepal, Vietnam, South Africa, and Mongolia.
The mentoring system plays a crucial role in promoting students’ personal growth and enhancing their essential generic attributes. With a strong emphasis on teamwork and effective communication, the LEAD mentors help engage other mentees to contribute to the international community and reflect on their strengths and weaknesses throughout their service learning journey from the programme.
Mentors were engaged to serve as interview panelists, collaborating with OSA staff to select mentees.
100+ LEAD student participants were selected and took part in the First Encounter Session.
By integrating leadership training with outbound social service, the LEAD programme not only enhances students’ empathy, compassion, and leadership skills but also broadens their global perspectives. The introduction of the mentoring system, with its train-the-trainer approach, enhances both mentors’ and mentees’ learning experiences from the programme. As the programme expands, we hope to provide a non-formal learning platform for students to become globally responsible leaders with a passion to contribute to the international community.
